Advising

Area of Specialty

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and Registered Investment Advisor, I am a fiduciary and as such, I am required to place my client’s interests first always. My goal as an advisor is to take the worry and anxiety out of managing finances. Money and investments are complicated, and most people simply want guidance so they can understand their situation and feel confident they’re on the right track. I work with people in all different industries and help them organize and optimize their resources so they can accomplish their goals, enjoy their lives, and focus more on the things that matter to them.

My clients are hardworking people who want clear plans for their futures. Some are teachers or nurses; others own very successful businesses. Most of them are in or near retirement, and I simplify the planning process by managing their accounts and helping them make wise decisions that align with their values and goals.

My Approach

Helping Others Live the Good Life

I’m very blessed with the freedom to spend quality time with my loved ones and pursue my passions, and I want my clients to have that same experience. I want them to be able to enjoy their hobbies and families and not worry about their futures. I’ve spent nearly 30 years in financial services, and my clients rely on me to take care of them—I oversee their accounts, make sure they’re on track for their goals, and check in with them to review and determine if any changes are warranted. They trust me with their life’s work, and I honor that by stewarding their wealth with integrity and diligence. As I guide them through their financial journey, I strive to provide them with a sense of freedom and peace of mind, knowing that a trusted professional is always looking out for their wellbeing.

The Early Years

Working Hard, Driving, & Discovering True Success

I was born in Boston in the 1950s and grew up with 10 sisters and one brother. Growing up, we didn’t have much but we were happy and never went hungry living in a duplex apartment in Brighton. My mother was a good cook and always baked homemade cookies, Whoopie Pies, and apple pie for the holidays. My dad was a professional singer but made no money at it, so he ended up as a construction worker. Somehow, my parents managed to put all of us through Catholic Schools. I realized at a young age that I would need to work hard to succeed, so I did. At the age of nine, I started shining shoes at neighborhood taverns. I had a paper route for several years, I washed dishes, and I painted houses.

In high school, I tried out for the hockey team, where I became the starting goalie and an all-star player by my senior year. In college, I drove for Boston Cab until a friend and I founded Commonwealth Limousine and offered me equity in the company. He said, “I need you—you’re good with people.” So I joined him in 1982, driving seven days a week at all hours of the night for 14 years. By the end of those 14 years, I was married with three young children and decided that if I wanted to be a good dad, I needed to be home more often. I have long believed that success is less about money and more about having a loving family and spending time on the things that matter. So I left the limousine business and started taking classes at Boston University to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®—a career I knew would not only afford me more time to spend with my family, but teach me how to help others do the same.

Becoming an Advisor

The Founding of Onboard Financial Management

Having grown up on welfare, I knew from a young age the importance of hard work and wise money management. I wanted a good life for me and my family—one where we could spend time together and not worry about the future. So I took night classes at Boston University to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, and in 1996, I started my financial services career with MetLife. In 2001, I earned my CFP® designation and spent several years learning and gaining experience before I joined a boutique investment firm in downtown Boston. There, I worked with a team of very successful, seasoned advisors, and together we managed around $150 million in client assets. It was a valuable learning experience in client service and HNW planning strategies, and when Covid hit, I was ready to start my own practice. I founded Onboard Financial Management in 2020 with the mission to help others achieve their definition of success.

My Family

Nurse Recruitment, Baseball, & Homeownership

Around the time I started with the limousine company, I met my wife Sandra while camping in New Hampshire. She was a nursing student at Fitchburg State University, and I knew very quickly that she was “the one.” We started dating, and I told her that if she planned to be a nurse, she should work at the best hospital—Massachusetts General Hospital. (I really wanted her to stay in Boston; she was from Northborough, a farm-centric area of the state with lots of trees, pigs, chickens and goats—not for this city boy. To my surprise, she listened, and she has been one of MGH’s best nurses since 1983.)

Sandra and I married in 1986 on the same day the Red Sox lost that fateful game to the Mets in the World Series. Growing up a diehard Sox fan, this was both the best and worst day of my life.

Our first daughter Kelsea was born in 1988. Three years later, we had our son Sean Michael, and in 1993, we welcomed Cecily to the world. With three kids, we decided to move out of our Boston condo and into a house in Natick, Massachusetts. It was an exciting time, and a big deal for a city boy like me—our first home with a driveway and a garage—no more looking for a parking spot on the street!

The Good Life

Rock Music, Cookouts, & Sleeping on a Boat

Once our kids were all grown up (Kelsea and Sean Michael now have kids of their own), Sandra and I moved back to Boston. We live on a boat (a 1988 36’ Mainship Double Cabin trawler) in the Constitution Marina, where we have an amazing view of Boston Harbo, Bunker Hill Monument and the USS Constitution. Our little community in the marina reminds me a lot of where I grew up—everyone knows each other, and we often get together to put on concerts (I’m the lead singer of a classic rock cover band, and luckily, there are several good musicians in the marina), share stories, and eat great food (though I’m pretty sure I’m the only one with an electric smoker on my aft deck). We also have a condo in Ashland where I have a home office and a camper we use in the spring and fall.

In 2024, we welcomed our third grandchild to the world.

Life is good, and I feel very lucky to have lived every moment of it.

I hope you feel the same.

Fun Facts

My favorite childhood memory is hitting a home run in Little League when I was 12 years old.

I could watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest over and over again—it’s funny and sad; it’s just a fantastic movie.

I still play competitive hockey as a goalie, though I’ve paid for it with both hips replaced, knee surgeries, shoulder surgery, hand surgery and elbow surgery. But what can I say? It’s in my blood and it’s fun.
